PROGRAMS

Erly Robinson Apprenticeship Program

The 2024 Erly Robinson Apprenticeship Program is composed of three students, a farm manager, and a local farmer. Students work weekly to complete farm tasks and learn about the different stages of growing produce, tool recognition and usage, and gardening techniques just to name a few.

We aim to spend 10-20% of our time on classroom learning and the remaining 80-90% in the field engaging in hands-on.

The program pays tribute to an outstanding teacher, community member, and gardener from Quitman County. Many community members attribute lifelong lessons to him. His dedication to In Her Shoes, Inc. before his passing in 2024 was truly remarkable. In honor of his memory, we carry on his legacy.

Food Access

IHS believes healthy food options should be accessible to everyone regardless of income, social status or location. Limited access to fresh healthy food is the leading cause of health issues in communities we serve. Through our Food Access program, we provide fresh food outlets in rural and low access communities by establishing food outlets and bringing together farmers, retailers and the community.

Farm Marketplace is our neighborhood grocery store established under the Food Access program. Located in Webb, MS, Farmacy eliminated the need for residents to drive more than miles for fresh food. It provides an outlet for local farmers to sell their produce and serves as a blueprint for IHS in increasing food access and reducing food waste in local farm businesses.

Farmacy Mobile

The mobile market, Farmacy Mobile,  will increase access to fresh locally grown produce and increase access to new markets among small local farmers. The market will visit 5 low income low access locations consistently each week.  The mobile market will access EBT and other methods of payment as well as offer produce purchase incentives.

Housing

In Her Shoes Inc believes that economic stability starts with stable, livable shelter. We support stability and improved quality of life through our transitional housing program and housing repair and rehabilitation program.

Since 2018, IHS has provided housing to over 70 homeless women, children, unaccompanied youth, veterans, elderly and disabled individuals. The program provides free or reduced housing to eligible participants based on availability. Our transitional housing program partners with Douglas County Courts, Wellstar Hospital Network and The Veterans Administration and local churches and nonprofits to housing homeless individuals in Douglas and Carroll counties.

IHS also administers a housing rehabilitation project to low income households in Georgia and in Mississippi with funding through USDA’s Housing Preservation Program. In 2018, IHS has repaired 4 homes in Georgia and 14 homes of low income property owners in Tallahatchie County. We are projecting to assist another 10 homeowners in Tallahatchie in spring 2024.

Farm Business Enhancement Program

The Farm Business Enhancement Program is designed to help beginner and intermediate-level farmers develop a whole farm plan. During the nine-month farm-to-market integration program, participants receive training through workshops and one-on-one technical assistance. Using a four-step model, we can ensure farmers increase their income by gaining access to new markets within one year. Those with ten or less years of farming experience are welcome.
